Actress makes comeback in Broken Vows
FOUR months after the death of her husband Dumi Masilela, Simphiwe “Simz” Ngema has made a comeback on the small screen. The actress, known for her role as Thuli in Muvhango, has also presented on Isiko, and now her fans can see her on the e.tv telenovela Broken Vows. The Star caught up with the star on her character and what more we can expect from her:
THE STAR (TS): What can you say about your character?
Simphiwe Ngema (SN): Her name is Dudu Mkhwanazi, she is a girl from uMlazi who is determined to make it big as a singer in the city of gold. She is a feisty go-getter who is stubborn and hard headed, but she also has a good heart
TS: What did you like most about the character?
SN: Her personality is fascinating. She does what she wants, when she wants and doesn’t care what other people think. She also has a big mouth. Lol!
TS: How did you prepare for the role?
SN: I’m originally from Joburg, so I’ve had to learn the KwaZulu-Natal Zulu and I’ve also had to do my research on people I thought are similar to the character.
TS: How does it feel to be back into the swing of things, as far as your career is concerned?
SN: Well, I never really left… I’ve been working behind the scenes a lot as a producer, but I’ve always made sure that I’m in front of the camera for a couple of months yearly, as being in front of the camera is my first love. In 2015, I left Muvhango, in 2016, I was in Pastor’s Kids and I also presented a cultural show Isiko on e.tv. And in 2017, I was in Greed and Desire.
TS: What can fans expect from you?
SN: I would like to be back on screen for a longer period this year, but I’m also currently producing a show which will be revealed soon. I am officially the brand ambassador for Little Feet Foundation, which deals with kids who have faced emotional and psychological challenges. I am also busy writing a book.
TS: What were the challenges you faced in bringing the character to life?
SN: Every character has challenges, it’s all about doing your research. I’m honestly just having fun with this character. It’s something I’ve never played before.
TS: How has it been going with the cast and crew in Broken Vows?
SN: The team in Broken Vows have been warm and welcoming. It’s been a breeze.
TS: How is it different from the sets you’ve worked on before?
SN: Well, most sets are similar; the difference would be the kind of people you work with. I am a very shy person, so I never really get involved in all the politics. I just stick to my job.
