EFF set to cut DA adrift on land issue
THE DA had better get its act together on the issue of land expropriation without compensation or risk losing the EFF’s support after the 2019 general elections, when coalitions could be required to govern.
EFF leader Julius Malema said the DA’s stance on the land issue will be closely observed.
Yesterday, Malema spoke to The Star after being interviewed by Thabo “T-Bo Touch” Molefe on his online radio platform TouchHD in Sandton.
On Tuesday, Malema told Parliament that the EFF would table a motion of no confidence in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro’s DA mayor Athol Trollip on April 6 over the party’s lack of support for the EFF’s motion on expropriation of land without compensation.
The EFF leader said it would call the DA to account when the time came to form coalitions after the elections
“We are going to be reviewing the conduct of the DA, both in the constitutional review committee and after the polls,” Malema said.
“This is bigger than just observing the DA in the metros. We are working towards the 2019 elections and the partnerships that could be formed thereafter,” Malema added.
“The attitude of every party on the issue of expropriation of land without compensation would determine how we (EFF) are going to relate to them after the elections,” he said.
The constitutional review committee was tasked by the National Assembly to conduct public engagements and report back to Parliament by the end of August on the correct modalities to expropriate land without compensation.
Parliament agreed in principle that the constitution should be amended and legislation passed in order to expropriate. The DA refused to support the motion.
