Better SA is possible – up to you

-

ME TOO. Me too. Me too. How much longer can we tolerate hearing these words?

A few weeks ago, a twowomen silent protest over allegations of sexual misconduct hit the Methodist City Mission Church in Pretoria.

In footage that went viral on social media, women in church uniform were seen and heard voicing their anger over the protest. Some men tried to forcefully remove the women from the stage. Seven days later, the protests spread to other branches.

It was only after the protest by the two brave women that the church said it would be looking into the allegations against the senior official.

A few days earlier, a video showing an Ekurhuleni principal having sex with a learner emerged. More videos and images were leaked to The Star, implicating the school’s teachers and administrators in the sex scandal.

Again, it took a protest by parents for the Gauteng Department of Education to act. To date, there is confusion on the exact date that the principal tendered his resignation.

Now, the question is, how many more women and children are suffering in silence?

Sexual abuse happens everywhere. Even churches and schools are not safe. Where should women and children seek refuge? Everyone has to take a stand against the abuse. One day, we must be able to say: we won the battle. A better South Africa for all is possible. It begins with you.
