Racist ranter in k-word video ‘mentally unstable’

- KAILENE PILLAY and SE-ANNE RALL

A CLOSE relative of Kessie Nair, who went on a racist rant, using the k-word to describe President Cyril Ramaphosa, said Nair was declared mentally unstable when he was released from prison in 2011.

The relative, who is not on speaking terms with Nair, asked not to be named. He said Nair was incarcerated in Westville Prison and served six years behind bars for fraud involving R17 500.

In the almost five-minute video posted on his Facebook page, Nair called Ramaphosa the k-word and said he should be charged with failing the nation and high treason.

Nair said he was prepared to go to jail for his comments.

“The marches, the Mandela Days, are a total mockery to the blood, the sacrifices of Nelson Mandela. I am prepared to go to prison for the rest of my life, or take a bullet.”

Nair also said people referring to themselves by race were creating a divide in the community. He said those who described themselves by their race were racist.

Speaking to The Star’s sister paper, The Mercury, yesterday, Nair’s close relative said he watched about a minute of the video and switched it off because he was “shocked to the core”.

Nair’s uncle was Billy Nair, an anti-apartheid activist and political prisoner on Robben Island who served time alongside Mandela.

“The family stand against everything Kessie has said in his video,” the relative said.

Former eThekwini councillor Brandon Pillay said he had opened a case of crimen injuria against Nair at Bayview police station. He noted it was not Nair’s first racist video.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said they were aware of the video and would be investigating it.

@bigkoostar

Racism, to me, is not only about being called the k-word. Racism is also when: 1) I am overlooked for promotion because I am black 2) I can’t express my dismay because of my colour 3) body searching and checking of slips happens only in shops or towns where only blacks are.

But President Zuma was and is still being insulted by racists; why hasn’t it been an issue?

@ImLoyisoLoliwe

The worst is yet to come to SA. I feel sorry for our kids and the upcoming kids.

@Sowellnomics

This is not freedom of speech; it’s racist and vile rhetoric aimed at degrading black South Africans. Send these scumbags to prison.

Hope he gets what he wants – a prison sentence. He is being divisive and is a racist. He also comes across as a few sandwiches short of a picnic – or he wanted to go viral. Either way – hit him where it hurts – lock him up and fine him. Hope the Human Rights people step in. #KessieNair

@Am_Blujay

#KessieNair calling the President of the country the k-word is what most black people go through every day at the hands of racist people in KwaZulu-Natal.

@londid53

We cannot expect our prisons to deal and manage these vile, bloody racist pigs #KessieNair. It’s high time we banish all racists from this country; this pig is not even worth our prisons.

@adila_chowan

I am beginning to think there is something in the water. Why do people continue to make racist comments?

@uZamaZulu

Instead of imprisoning these idiots like #KessieNair, can’t we just ban them, somehow force them out of the country one by one?

@MokumoMokumo

Racism is the one thing racist people are good at, but #KessieNair seems to be an exception for that sauceless, dry, poor pronunciation of that word. Mxm.

@bradhendricks

There’s something not quite right (apart from the obvious) with this Kessie Nair story. Also, I’ve learnt over time never to take anything out of Durban/KZN at face value. Something else is happening here.
