The Star Early Edition

600kW can be yours

So, if you own a Mustang and you live far from the sea, what do you do to ensure you aren’t chomped by GTIs and diesel SQ5s between the lights? You supercharge it, of course.

A highly-evolved version of RGMotorsport’s Ford Mustang GT Supercharged stomped its authority on Tuner Wars at Tarlton in Gauteng last Saturday, as close to 100 of South Africa’s fastest straight-line drivers gathered to show their pace and their car’s traction.

RGMotorsport’s Mustang V8, built for car enthusiast Renier Ackerman, who doesn’t miss an opportunity to unleash it, accomplished a best run of 11.62 seconds with a terminal speed of 192.2 km/h on the quarter-mile strip.

RGMotorsport founder Rob Green gives some background to the upgrade: “Renier bought the car new and came to us some months back saying he was tired of being bested by even mildly tweaked hot hatches. ‘Don’t worry,’ we said, ‘there’s a solution’.”

A bolt-on Whipple supercharger and a boost upgrade (achieved through varying the pulley sizes), and watermethanol injection to drop the temperature of the intake mix is the solution.

So, with 600kW on tap, this Mustang is no longer fodder for the hot hatch brigade. Your Mustang can also be as powerful, and as fast, if you pop into RGMotorsport to upgrade your car today. Be prepared, though, as the full kit will set you back R225 500 (including a full exhaust upgrade and a six-month/20 000 km warranty). Also, you will lose your Ford OEM warranty.
