Information centre opens

- ANNA COX

SANDTON, with its annual average foot traffic in excess of 24 million people, is home to the City of Joburg’s new visitor information centre.

Joburg Tourism has marked Tourism Month this year by unveiling not only the new visitor information centre on Nelson Mandela Square, but also an updated, fresh website and mobile app.

At the launch last week, Leah Knott, a member of the mayoral committee for economic development, said the location of the centre was ideal as the area served as a strategic point of arrival for the majority of visitors to Joburg before they departed for other destinations. Apart from the Gautrain station and shopping facilities, the Nelson Mandela statue was also an important drawcard, attracting millions of visitors a year, she said.

One of Joburg Tourism’s core mandates was to provide online tourism information, along with online SMME and association support to embrace international technological trends and to remain competitive in the digital sphere, Knott added.

Joburg Tourism had developed a mobile app while also redeveloping its website (www.visit.joburg) to be more user-friendly and mobi-friendly.

The key difference between the website/mobi-site and the mobi app was that the website was not location based, and it had more information such as news articles, general information about Joburg, business registration and an interactive regional map. |
