result, implying that Fayulu had won.

The DRC – one of the richest countries in the world – has a wealth of minerals with an estimated $24 trillion deposits, of raw mineral ores, including the world’s largest reserves of cobalt and significant quantities of diamonds, gold, coltan, manganese, uranium, and oil, largely “owned” by Europeans and Americans, under the British/French and Belgian imperial umbrella. Therefore, what interest and moral authority does the US, Britain, France, Belgium and Germany have on issues of democracy, social justice, equality and economic emancipation in the DRC that it can make such a request to the UNSC when their DRC involvement has been marked by wars and injustices?

Western powers have become used to making decisions on behalf of Africa and Africans, thus they become untrusting when Africans democratically decide for themselves.

The relationship between the DRC and its former colonial masters has been unjust and oppressive. It is time that the DRC and other Francophone countries in the continent break the umbilical cord that has sustained Western economies. These, according to Mamadou Koulibaly, the Speaker of the Ivorian National Assembly and Professor of Economics, “undermines and sabotages growth, industrialisation, autonomy and policy independence of these countries”, ravaged for decades by war and famine.

With all its minerals, the DRC can no longer be depicted as mere recipient of financial Western aid. It must break away from the West and its institutions which have consciously stolen from Africa without giving back.

The raw material of the DRC has built the wealth of France, Britain, Belgium and America while the children of Congo are at war, mired in poverty.

DRC electoral commission head Corneille Nangaa Yobeluo has already indicated only the DRC Constitutional Court could consider legal challenges. Russia, China, and South Africa indicated the electoral commission’s conclusions should not be interfered with.

Let all Africans support democracy and President Felix Tshisekedi who has a monumental task of implementing African and Congolese ideas about governance, leadership and the economy. Is it not time that the US, Britain, France, Belgium and Germany repent of their colonial mentality and allow Africa to govern itself without interference premised on false generosity?
