Delegation calls for release of detainees
KHARTOUM: An American congressman visiting the Sudanese capital has called for the Sudanese authorities to release all political detainees.
Gus Bilirakis, a Republican accompanied by a congressional delegation, met various groups at the weekend who were recently incarcerated during the ongoing anti-government protests.
Sudan’s three-month political crisis was discussed, as was the detention of an unnamed US citizen.
The meeting attendees also agreed that the only way to resolve Sudan’s political impasse was a negotiated peace involving dialogue that respected human rights.
However, negotiations have stalled over the fact that the Sudanese opposition groups are demanding that Omar al-Bashir and his government relinquish power. |
