Hotto wants some silverware

- MINENHLE MKHIZE

DEON HOTTO has been in South Africa for too long to have nothing tangible to show for his toil.

It is for this reason that the Namibian international has targeted the upcoming season as the campaign in which he finally bags some silvereware.

“I haven’t won any cup in South Africa and I’m looking forward to winning something,” said the speedy Wits. “I want to win two or three cups this season.”

Two or three might be a tad ambitious. But given that Wits are coached by Gavin Hunt, it might not be that far-fetched.

Under his guidance Wits won their first league title in their century-long history having also won the MTN8 title.

That though, was before Hotto joined them from Golden Arrows where he had played for four seasons without getting close to any trophies. The lack of silverware in the South African top division has been pretty frustrating for Hotto.

But that has not stopped him from always giving his all, the winger having been one of the season’s star signings last campaign as he took to his role at the Clever Boys like a duck to water and shone for the Johannesburg outfit.

He knows it is only a matter of time before he prances about on the field with a winners’ medal around his neck. But for that to happen he and his teammates will have to up their game a bit from last season. What with the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns sure to want to retain their championship and runnersup Orlando Pirates eager to make it third time lucky following two seasons as the league’s bridesmaids.

“I just need to keep my head up. I want to start the season well, to start it the same way I finished it. And I need to continue to work hard,” Hotto said.”It is all about being focused.”

Hotto was recently in Egypt with Namibia for the Africa Cup of Nations where the Brave Warriors crashed out in the group stages after suffering defeats against Ivory Coast, Morocco and South Africa.

“It was a learning curve for us. We now have to work hard to qualify for the next Afcon. At least we are now experienced. I learnt a lot there. We played against bigger countries. It was a good experience for a small country like Namibia. We don’t have a lot of players that are playing outside Namibia.”
