Convicted racist hands herself over

- ASANDA MATLHARE

CONVICTED racist Vicki Momberg finally appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday after weeks of being on the run.

The 49-year-old handed herself over to the investigators at Douglasdale police station following a brief consultation between the police and her legal representatives.

Momberg’s lawyer, advocate Anesh Sukdeo blamed the magistrate for their client’s brief stint as a fugitive.

“The magistrate that dealt with the matter, who convicted and sentenced her, was the same magistrate who authorised an order to have her arrested.

“The arguments were based on an interpretation of a 30-day period and the argument was also based on the magistrate being conflicted. The magistrate should have recused herself from this matter,” said Sukdeo.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Momberg was “on the run”. Police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said Momberg had not been found at two addresses she presented. Momberg was found guilty on four counts of crimen injuria after a racist rant at police officers – including calling them the “k” word.

This was after she made several telephone calls in February 2016 to the police’s 10 111 line following a smash-and-grab incident. She insulted the officers during the telephone calls and she referred to them as “f**k*rs”.

Momberg was sentenced in March 2018 to three years in prison.

Peters said “the warrant of arrest was issued on August 1, and I believe that is when Momberg did not hand herself over to the court as was prescribed and that is why she was arrested this (yesterday) morning.”

Momberg will remain in custody.
