Deadline date approaches for NSFAS applications for 2020
STUDENTS have up to the end of the month to apply for funding through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
Applications for funding for the 2020 academic year closes at the end of November.
So far, the financial aid scheme had received a total of 287 769 applications nationwide, said NSFAS administrator Dr Randall Carolissen.
He said there had been a slight increase in the number of applications from students who intend to study at technical and vocational education and training colleges, from the previous low of 23 001 in October to a 37 132 by November 4.
Students with disabilities were also being urged to apply, as so far, only 775 applications had been received.
“A total of 145 190 applications have been received from Sassa beneficiaries. Students with a disability are encouraged to take this opportunity and apply for funding,” Carolissen said.
To be eligible to be funded by the scheme at a public institution of higher learning, a student should: • Be a South African citizen. • Come from a family with a combined annual household income of not more than R350 000 per annum. However, the limit is R600 000 per annum for those with disabilities.
• Agree to the terms and conditions of the NSFAS grant or bursary awarded.
■ To apply, students need to provide a certified copy of their ID and a signed and completed consent form.
■ Students with disabilities, students who are Sassa beneficiaries, and those who are supported by parents who receive social grants automatically qualify for NSFAS, provided they fall within the set threshold.
