First-year students put a ring on it after two weeks of dating

- LUNGILE MATSUMA

TWO Rhodes University first-year students who got married after only dating for two weeks have been offered a chance to celebrate their union.

The couple caused a social media frenzy on Tuesday when news of their holy matrimony broke.

The young couple trended on Twitter when they were photographed signing what look like a marriage certificate and pictures of them outside the Home Affairs were also shared.

@Yeyethu_Baballo_ tweeted: “Rhodes students got married today after being together for 2 weeks.”

It is alleged the couple from Rhodes’ Enoch House tied the knot on Wednesday.

The university’s Student Representative Council released a statement congratulating the young couple and “hopes they enjoy their lives together as a married husband and wife... wishing them well in their personal (life) and academics.

“Should they wish to celebrate their union, we have a diligent event planner on the council,” read the statement.

There were mixed reactions in Twitterville.

@TumiMmakgabo congratulated the couple and questioned society’s double standards when it comes to celebratory events.

“Congratulations to the newly weds #Rhodeswedding Society is so used to men graduating, buying a Polo, making kids with different women then finally settling down. Our parents got married at an early age and most are still together, so let’s have a little faith and not prejudge,” she tweeted.

While @khen_sa_ni tweeted how she could not get a guy to say “I love you” after three years of dating.

“They have known each other for two weeks .... I can’t even get a guy to say he loves me after 3 years of dating. Someone explain this to me,” she wrote.

@KeneMansa tweeted how this wedding has shown us how the social fabric has decayed with something like matrimony being ridiculed... yet the most sacred act (sex) is encouraged on the first date especially if the fellow has money.

“Marriage is long term and needs time. etc but since when has giving yourself to another been worth any less? People have married at first sight, some have had sex on the first night and have been together forever others have failed. There is no general template to Love.”

Rhodes spokesperson Velisile Bukula said the couple did not want to speak to the media.

“Unfortunately the couple do not want to speak to anyone. They are not even taking calls,” Bukula said.

The last time South Africa got excited over a wedding was last November 2019 when the KFC proposal of Nonhlanhla Soldaat and Hector Mkansi happened.
