Breakdown in compliance

-

THE vast majority of Joburg residents have heeded the call and are in compliance with the regulations that relate to the lockdown.

However, in highly-dense areas such as Denver, George Goch and Jeppe hostels, which a team from the City of Joburg visited this week, there is a need to intensify awareness on the lockdown and to enforce the laws as they relate to the sale of liquor and spaza-shops.

So said Joburg mayor Geoff Makhubo speaking after the visit to the areas.

“We are pleased that a majority of citizens have heeded the call and are in compliance with the regulations that relate to the lockdown. However, in all three hostels in Denver, (we) found residents converged in groups of more than 100 with complete disregard of social distancing.

“We’ve managed to engage with izinDuna at the hostels, who have agreed to co-operate… Several of the gatherings were dispersed upon conclusion of our engagements and we are pleased with the understanding and co-operation of izinDuna.”
