The ‘secrets’ behind Hunt’s successes

including his lone Nedbank Cup title, but what was remarkable for Hunt was winning three league titles on the trot.

He has continued his rise in South African football while at the Clever Boys.

Hunt has opened up about his achievements with so-called modest teams.

“Organisation, get the right players in, work with the right people from the top down to the bottom,” he said.

“It doesn’t always start with me. It is from the top to the bottom. Coaching in the field and getting them organised, playing a certain way and doing certain things. Like I said, it is not only me, it is from top to bottom – management and CEOs and all that,” Hunt said of the ‘secret’ behind his accomplishments with smaller clubs.

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane laid the foundation during his tenure with SuperSport by turning them into cup specialists. The meticulous Hunt then propelled SuperSport to even greater heights when he took over the coaching reins at the club. He turned Matsatsantsa into a formidable force.

Surprisingly, achieving title glory with SuperSport doesn’t rank as the best among the multitude of his accomplishments.

“Winning the (First Division) league with Seven Stars rates as the best moment in my coaching career,” said Hunt, who helped Stars gain promotion to the elite league back in 1998.

The most difficult part about success is its sustainability. It is something Hunt has mastered but admitted remains a challenge.

“It is the hardest part of the job (to keep your top players) at these small clubs because the big clubs come and take your own players. That’s why it is even harder to win leagues with small teams because you can’t keep your best players.

“That’s the nature of the game, that’s the nature of the business all over the world. It is what it is,” Hunt added.

Nevertheless, Hunt is not obsessed about working for one of the top three clubs in the country in future.

“I’m under contract now with the team. I’m really happy at the club. Those are things that are hearsay. It is all about being at the right place at the right time. I’m happy where I am,” Hunt explained.

The only missing piece of the puzzle in his list of achievements with the Clever Boys is the Nedbank (FA) Cup.

“I want to see this team competing,” said Hunt. “I want to see us winning more trophies.

“The only one that we haven’t won (here at Wits) is the Nedbank Cup. We lost in the Nedbank Cup final (in 2014 against Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban) and that’s something we want to achieve.

“We are in the semi-finals this year (against Sundowns). We want to be competitive and we are looking forward to the semi-finals. I want to give players the platform to go to the next level.”
