STRUGGLE icon Andrew Mlangeni is expected to be accorded a fitting state funeral when he is laid to rest today.
The government yesterday finalised arrangements for the special official funeral of the late Isithwalandwe/ Seaparankwe before his remains arrived at his Dube family home in Soweto.
President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a Category 1, state funeral for Mlangeni. In terms of the Presidential declaration the national flags have been flying at halfmas since last week.
The funeral service will be held at the University of Johannesburg, Soweto Campus, from 9am.
In a media statement sent by the government, the funeral will be live streamed and broadcast on the SABC television as well as radio channels.
ANC treasurer general, Paul Mashatile, is expected to officiate the draping of the ANC flag on Mlangeni’s coffin as a gesture of gratitude and in honour of the icon’s unbroken years of service to the ANC.
The government has set up a memorial page for anyone who wishes to send messages of condolences.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes between 8am and noon as the following roads will be closed: Makgalemela and Masina roads, Makgalemele and Ncwane roads,
Ncwane, Ndlovu and Lethoasa streets.
Mlangeni passed away on July 21 at the age of 95 after being admitted at the Military 1 hospital following an abdominal complaint. Mlangeni will be buried at Roodepoort Cemetery.
