How we can honour Mlangeni’s life

-

THE LAST Rivonia trialist and Struggle stalwart, Andrew Mlangeni, was one of the major voices against corruption until his last day. He made his views known about its negative impacts on socio-economic development.

It would, therefore, be befitting to honour his legacy and role he played in the liberation of the country, by rooting out corruption and focusing all resources on the benefit of the people.

Corruption is destroying the country and depriving the needy of basic services and infrastructure to improve their lives. It fuels inequality.

The auditor-general’s reports shows how corruption cripples service delivery, leaving communities worse in order for a few immoral officials and businesses to benefit.

The main rot is within the government. The government must take the lead to deal with the challenge. Our leaders must heed Mlangeni’s calls against corruption and lead the fight, first in the government and then in the private sector.

We must commend the leaders who are taking action against corruption in their departments. Leaders such as Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation Lindiwe Sisulu and KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala.

Fighting corruption is everybody’s business as it affects everyone.

The public also has a critical role to report corruption to ensure the delivery of quality services in their communities.

Let us all play an active role in the fight, in order to build a better country in honour of Andrew Mlangeni.
