Ways to improve traffic flow in Sandton
THIS letter is directed at the Sandton management responsible for the traffic lights and road signs in this suburb.
I have given below a few examples of the problems, and how they can be rectified.
1. On Benmore Drive, there is a turning lane into Crawford school. The sign on the road shows only a right turn, and it should also show an arrow for traffic also going straight on. Many drivers ignore the turn sign, and this does sometimes cause a problem with cars on their left that expect them to turn right. The arrow on the road should show a right turn, and straight through.
2. Further down Benmore Drive, there is a traffic light leading into Benmore shopping centre. This traffic light does not have filters and cars in both directions get backed up.
3. There are two sets of traffic lights on Kelvin Drive, between Bowling Avenue, and Woodmead Drive, that lead into business parks. The sequencing of these lights, especially at weekends, is such that cars on Kelvin Drive wait for a lengthy period. These are just a few examples of poor traffic controls, but they do lead to frustration, and unnecessary risk-taking.
Making our intersections work safer and efficiently, is not a complicated or expensive task.
