Gallery showcases artworks by artists under 40
THIS heritage month, KRONE x WHATIFTHEWORLD Gallery will give 40 artists under the age of 40 an opportunity to showcase their artworks.
The 60 diverse works from these artists will be installed across seven indoor and outdoor sites at the historic Twee Jonge Gezellen Estate, Tulbagh.
The six-month-long exhibition, which kicks off on Saturday, September 25, represents a celebratory moment on the contemporary art calendar, drawing on artists from across the African continent and beyond.
Collectively, they address a world which demands renewed negotiations of intimacy and sociality.
These responses span painting, photography, sculpture, murals, video, mixed media and installation.
A combination of upcoming and well-established artists will showcase artwork representing a generation determined to flip the script and manifest new ways of making and being in the world. “Through their pieces, the participating artists reflect on the one hand, deep care for images which bind us to history, and, on the other hand, an impulse to experiment with new forms of expression.
“The exhibiting artists share a desire to create a hybrid, often poetic forms that are a testament to their ability to meet challenges with innovation and sensitivity.”
The participating artists include Chris Soal (South Africa), Lakin Ogunbanwo (Nigeria), Stephané Edith Conradie (Namibia), Sepideh Mehraban (Iran) and Ronald Muchatuta (Zimbabwe).
Some of the works to look forward to, including oil paint and plaster sculptures by Mia Chaplin, exquisitely rendered beadwork sculptures by Asemahle Ntlonti in collaboration with Noxolo Dyosi and Pumla Lempuku, delicate pencil drawing by Dada Khanyisa, large-scale woodblock reliefs by Sthenjwa Luthuli and paintings by Callan Grecia and Matthew Eguavoen.
In 2019, an artist-in-residence programme was set up at the estate as a way of encouraging artists to experiment without the pressure of a commercial outcome.
The KRONE x WHATIFTHEWORLD Gallery offers an immersive experience celebrating African contemporary art, set in the bucolic winelands town of Tulbagh. With over 300 years of history, Twee Jonge Gezellen is at the apex of heritage and innovation. The artist residency programme, hosted in the heart of this working wine farm, offers both a space for quiet moments of contemplation as well as moments of wild intensity – a time to push boundaries while taking in new horizons.
Entrance to the exhibition is free. Pre-booking is essential.
