Andy wants to have an impact on people’s lives
FOR THE past decade, broadcaster and media personality Andy Maqondwana has dedicated herself to amplifying her craft and as a result of her zeal, her career has since been on an upward trajectory.
Her vim-and-vigour personality behind the mic has garnered her a lot of listeners back home with many applauding her extraordinary work on the airwaves.
The Eastern Cape-born talent took us through her epic highs as a broadcaster and how she became part of Kaya 959, one of the most prominent commercial radio stations in SA.
The rising star keeps Kaya listeners company on her weekday midday show between noon and 3pm on Feel Good with Andy Maqondwana.
She also cheers the audience with her bubbly presence on weekends on Reloaded with Andy from 3pm to 6pm.
Maqondwana talks of having a love for radio just as a listener and later “took a shot” while studying at Stellenbosch University where she honed her skills.
With her affinity for radio, the broadcaster said she had known from the outset that she would be behind the mic.
Curiosity played an integral part in finding out the depth and the behind-the-scenes aspects of the on-air experience, something that has helped Maqondwana’s career journey.
She says her transition from a community radio station to a commercial radio station was smooth because of the basics that she was already equipped with.
“The discipline from community radio stations helps in getting into commercial radio stations. When I was on campus radio they treated it like I was on the commercial radio station,” she said.
She gave her biggest highlights on radio as the opportunity to interact with some of the country’s notables,such as Ntsiki Mazwai.
Apart from her radio career, Maqondwana has also been involved in a Netflix podcast Never late: African Time, which delves into conversations surrounding stars of the African continent.
The media personality says anyone who aspires to be in the entertainment industry needs to invest their time in learning about their desired craft.
“Start somewhere, wishing is one thing and it is a good thing to wish and to want, but start at the bottom. We all start in places where we are not happy but you have to do the work.”
With the platform given to her, the radio star wants to impact people from all works of life in an inspiring way.
