AFROPOP singer Zakrim Phiri, affectionately known as Manny Yack, continues to unpack real-life experiences through his music.

He prides himself in telling stories that touch crucial issues that listeners may relate to.

He says his new motivational single Noodles speaks about the livelihoods of young people in marginalised areas in the hope of shedding light on the gap that exists in society.

The singer was snapped up by long-standing record label Ambitious Records, and he has worked with artists such as Nasty C, Tellaman and Beast.

After the success of his previous releases, he hopes listeners will also be able to relate to Noodles.

“It’s simply a motivational song. It’s a story about a young boy who grew up in a remote area with not much opportunity but who dared to dream. It’s a motivation to people who don’t live in cities where there are a lot of opportunities to advance their dreams. I’m just saying it’s possible wherever you come from.”

The KwaZulu-Natal-born artist said getting this message across was important to him as he believed it might give his listeners a different approach to life.

“It’s important for me because I wouldn’t be chasing my dream if I didn’t see anybody else do it. The music I listened to growing up is what made me see a bigger world.

“So I also owe it to the youth that are coming up now to give them that inspiration because it could make a difference – even if it is one kid.”

He highlights how a simple meal can be a luxury in some parts of the world while for some it’s just an ordinary thing. “The everyday meal of a college student is a luxury to some parts of the world. One gets to see how far apart these worlds are.

“I feel like a lot of people resonate with the message, especially kids in high school right now, because I speak about the difficulties I faced. And it’s a reality for a lot of kids right now.”
