Face it: Man United’s glory days are over

- T MARKANDAN |

REMEMBER the days when the great Manchester United was at the pinnacle of its success, and the bars and clubs used to be buzzing and humming with boisterous, arrogant Man United?

I remember once walking into a club in Chatsworth when Man United was playing against its great rival, Arsenal. The club was packed with noisy Man United supporters. When Arsenal scored against Man, I cheered. Then one angry supporter flung a glass of beer in my face.

Teams, especially the smaller ones, used to dread going to Old Trafford. It was such a fortress. They stood no chance against Man United. But nowadays, teams have no fear playing Man. They are easier to play against than Liverpool or Manchester City. Sir Alex Ferguson can only watch in disbelief and see his former team being humiliated by Liverpool and Arsenal.

When did you ever see a minnow like Brighton thrash United 4-0? Now the Red Devils cannot even qualify for next season’s Champions League. All good things must come to an end.

But what is perplexing is that Man United has such a strong squad of wellheeled players. There’s Ronaldo, Pogba, Cavani, Rashford and Fernandes. Pogba is so highly paid he can afford to own a collection of exotic cars. He even flashes about, showing off with a Rolls-Royce. Unlike Ronaldo, who tries so hard for his team, Pogba has been a big flop for United.

All the stars of Man United couldn’t save it from ignominy.
