HUNDREDS of people in Nigeria’s northwestern city of Sokoto demonstrated at the weekend over the arrest of students following the murder of a Christian student accused of blasphemy.

Africa’s most populous country is roughly divided between Muslims and Christians.

Deborah Samuel was stoned to death on Thursday and her body burnt by a mob of Muslim students of the college after she posted something on social media they deemed insulted the Prophet Muhammad.

Police said they made two arrests and they were searching for other suspects who appeared in footage of the murder which circulated on social media. |

Iraq

IRAQI authorities have exhumed the remains of 15 people from a mass grave believed to hold dozens more, likely killed under late dictator Saddam Hussein, an official said at the weekend.

The mass grave was discovered last month near the city of Najaf during work to build a residential compound.

It is believed to date back to the

1990s when Hussein unleashed a deadly campaign against members of the majority Shia community in southern Iraq that left nearly 100 000 dead.

Iraq paid tribute to the missing today, which is known as the National Day of Mass Graves. | AFP

United States

ABORTION rights supporters started protesting in cities across the US, kicking off what organisers said would be “a summer of rage” if the US Supreme

Court overturns the Roe v Wade case that legalised abortion nationwide.

Planned Parenthood, Women’s

March and other abortion rights groups organised more than 300 “Bans Off

Our Bodies” marches on Saturday, with the largest turnouts in New York

City, Washington, DC, Los Angeles and Chicago.

The court’s final ruling, which could give states the power to ban abortion, is expected next month. | Reuters
