BUDDING multi-talented musician Midnight Uzo has set her sights on stardom with the release of her debut single.

Skhumbuzo Mazibuko, who goes by the stage name of Midnight Uzo, launched the single called Midnight, a song she composed at night, on several digital music platforms yesterday.

Mazibuko studied music at Stellenbosch University, plays several instruments and sings opera as well.

Mazibuko, 26, grew up in Joburg and Pietermaritzburg and is a firm believer in women’s rights and a proud advocate of gay rights.

The budding star said she hoped to become a proud advocate for mental health issues since she struggled with mental illness from a young age.

Speaking to The Star, Mazibuko said she came from a family of politicians and musicians.

She said she was able to tell the story of her life better through the medium of music.

“A lot of my music is written when I am in the depths of my depression or when I am manic.

“It depends on what is going on; it would all depend on what’s happening at the time.

“I have written intimate songs such as a song on gender-based violence,” she said.

Mazibuko, who described her music as funk and pop, said she wanted to explore a space in music that had not been taken.

“I started working on the beginnings of my EP and one night the music just came to my head and I started putting something on my laptop.

“The single I am releasing sounds more global and it’s an excellent product that I want to share with the world,” the musician said.

Mazibuko added that both her mother and father were musical people.

She, however, refused to discuss her parents’ careers and only wished to focus on herself.

“My mother has this beautiful alto voice and I think that is where I get the talent from.”

She said church played a big role in her spiritual growth and her musical training,

“I used to love the songs that were not traditional Anglican but we sang them as choruses,” Mazibuko said.
