Future of 60 million hinges on election

- FAROUK ARAIE |

CADRES and comrades will congregate in Durban in December to elect a new Lord of The Ring to govern a country in complete despair.

The new leader will inherit a shattered economy, a destroyed rail and road system, crime on an epic scale, an energy system on the verge of collapse, critical infrastructure that is decayed and on the verge of disintegration, critical life support systems that no longer exist, brazen legal defiance that is causing seismic shock waves across the temples of law enforcement, corruption on a scale so vast its scope and depth will take 30 years to codify.

Among the gathering will be the facilitators of human corruption, in proud self-adulation, readying themselves with millions of rand of celebrations of pomp and bundu bashing, enjoying the comforts of luxury and unfettered power spun by the web of exploitation, while 7 million people are starving, 8 million are unemployed, 250 000 are homeless, 40% go to bed hungry and 19 million live in extreme poverty.

These deadly facts are not an illusion – they could serve as a catalyst, which could trigger an upheaval that could derail our political orbit.

Time is not on our side. We need to urgently tackle these critical issues.

Tragically, many in the corridors of power of the past 27 years chose to bury their heads in the sands as anarchy, chaos and lawlessness were used by the masses to draw the attention of our leaders who were in hibernation

The 4 000 delegates who will be casting the crucial votes must be reminded that the destiny of this beleaguered country is in their hands.

At stake is far more than the ANC. The future of 60 million people hinges on the outcome of the 55th ANC conference. We dare not falter: the consequences are too ghastly.
