Power cuts, fires hit Oz

SYDNEY: Homes on Australia’s southern coast struggled through power cuts yesterday as Adelaide sweltered through its hottest start to the new year since 1900, with temperatures at 41°C. And more than 100 forest fires raged in Victoria state, where three years ago more than 500 000 hectares were burnt, more than 2 000 properties were destroyed and 173 people were killed.
