Nigeria faces riots over hike

Nigeria braced itself for protests after the government scrapped subsidies on fuel, doubling fuel costs. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria were to meet yesterday to set a date for a strike involving “tens of millions” of people, NLC secretary-general Owei Lakemfa said. Protests erupted in the market area of Yaba in the commercial capital, Lagos. Nigeria, which imports most of its fuel due to a lack of refining capacity, abolished 1.2 trillion naira ($60.26 billion) of subsidies on Sunday. – Bloomberg
