Volkswagen’s CC gets a makeover

The CC has been facelifted, two-litre models now cost more

- MINESH BHAGALOO

HE CC badge stands for Comfort Coupé, and the four-door car is the latest model in the Volkswagen South Africa’s range to get whitened and brightened.

The Passat-based CC was launched here in 2009 as a sportierstyled large sedan for VW fans, and along with its new facelift it includes some minor mechanical tweaks. These include an electronic diff lock as standard (XDS in VWspeak) and the manual gearbox has been dropped from the range (sixspeed DSG is your only option).

Cosmetic surgery up front sees the sedan getting the now wellknown VW corporate face with new chrome radiator grille, different bixenon headlights (with cornering lights), and a redesigned bonnet and bumper. At the back the CC gets new LED tail lights while indicator lights are now LEDs too.

Interior upgrades include new front sport seats with optional heating and cooling capability and a new 6-CD changer sound system (but still no USB slot – VW still runs on SD cards), among others.

The cabin is quieter thanks to better all-round insulation and a new windscreen acoustic film.

More exciting are the driver assistance systems now on offer, some standard, some not.

Fatigue detection is now standard and will detect when you’re falling asleep behind the wheel; Light Beam Assist (optional) will

Tautomatically switch between dip and main beams for you, and the latest Park Assist (standard) will not only parallel park for you but will now perpendicular park for you too (you have to see this in action to believe it!)

Other new and nifty options include Easy Open which, like in the recently-launched BMW 3 Series, incorporates a sensor under the rear bumper which detects foot movement and pops the bootlid open (ideal for when your hands are full). The CC now also offers a swivelling towbar, which swings in and out at the press of a button; and the rear backrests can now be unlatched through levers under the rear shelf. A three-seater bench is standard.

Pricing of the 3.6 V6 version is unchanged, with the two-litre models costing around R9 000 more
