Mahindra Xylo MPV to go it alone

At the price the Xylo is an attractive purchase for larger families

NDIAN carmaker Mahindra has reduced its Xylo people-carrier range in South Africa to a single model.

The Xylo panel van is no longer available and the seven-seater Xylo multi purpose vehicle (MPV) is available on order only – making the eight-seater MPV the only model available in SA going forward.

The eight-seater is new, getting its looks from the recentlylaunched XUV500 sports utility vehicle. With a competitive price tag of R219 900 (which includes a 3year/60 000km service plan and 3year/100 000km warranty) it should also raise some eyebrows.

Standard spec, despite the keen price, includes leather seats, a twotone dashboard finished with glossy wood panels, climate control with outlets to all three rows of seating, audio controls on the steering wheel, foldable trays behind the first and second row seats, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity and an onboard computer.

For versatility the second and third rows fold flat, and can be used

Powering the Xylo is a 2.2-litre diesel engine good for 88kW and 280Nm, mated to a five-speed manual ‘box. Suspension is independent at the front – the back gets a revised multi-link coil spring rear setup which also includes something called Extra Stability Technology (EST) for body roll in tight corners.

Safety features include airbags for the driver and front seat passenger; ABS with electronic brake distribution; front and rear fog lamps.

“With its appealing blend of utility and style, the stylish new Xylo is the ideal vehicle for those looking for a versatile and spacious MPV which can transport the entire family in comfort, especially on long road trips,” said Ashok Thakur, CEO of Mahindra SA.

Mahindra currently has 47 dealers in SA, and since launching locally in 2004 has sold 16 000 vehicles. The carmaker also acquired a majority stake in Korea’s SsangYong Motor Company last year.
