Truck puts a stop to bank robbers’ getaway

LONDON: Zeus, a Great Dane that towers 2.2m on its hind legs, has been named the tallest dog ever recorded in the latest Guinness Book of World Records launched today.

The giant three-year-old from Michigan in the US eats an entire 14kg bag of food every day and weighs 70.3kg.

Measuring 1.12m from paw to withers – the point between the shoulder blades – he breaks the record of Giant George, another Great Dane.

“The most common thing people ask is: ‘Is that a dog or a horse?’ ” says owner Denise.

The book – the latest edition of the world’s best-selling copyrighted series – also names Oklahoma Sam, a four-year-old American Mammoth Jackstock, as the tallest living donkey on the planet, at 1.55m from hoof to withers. – Sapa-AFP LOS ANGELES: Suspected bank robbers fleeing county sheriff ’s deputies hurled cash from a speeding SUV yesterday, drawing people into the streets until a truck blocked their path and they had to surrender.

In a bizarre scene followed by TV helicopters, a large crowd pressed in as deputies with guns drawn pulled two men from the SUV in South Los Angeles.

City police came to their aid and formed skirmish lines to move the crowd back. Along the route of the car chase, people were scooping up the money.

Police spokesman Commander Andrew Smith said it appeared the suspects threw the money in hopes of drawing people into the road to block the pursuing patrol cars. “A lot of people came out [of] their houses, they saw this on TV, they saw that money was being thrown,” Smith told KNBC-TV.

Several hundred people gathered around the deputies during the dangerous moment of arrest.

The incident began 56km north-west of central Los Angeles in the Santa Clarita area where four men committed an armed bank robbery.

The 90-minute chase came to an end when a big truck made a right turn and blocked the SUV’s path. It was not clear whether the driver did so intentionally. – Sapa-AP
