S THE dates for the fifth season of Tropika Island of Treasure draw closer, the reality is setting in for the celebrity contestants that they will be competing for a cool prize of R1 million.

In a few weeks, seven lucky people will be selected from thousands of hopeful entrants to join this year’s celebs in the game-cum-reality show.

The seven celebrities taking part this season include Reeva Steenkamp, Mario Ogle, Da Les, Phuti Khomo, Pearl Thusi, AKA and Jay Anstey.

Some of these local stars found the time to speak to

about where they are at in preparing for the show.

“I am so excited to be on this show,” said Ogle.

“I would like to think of myself as the farthest from being a celeb in the group because I am reserved and keep to myself most of the time,” he explained.

Famous for his music and chiselled body, the singer said he has been training hard to make sure he will perform well in the field events, if there are any.

In contrast, rapper Da Les is really not breaking a sweat to match Ogle’s. As always, he is taking it easy, trying to have as much fun as possible while on the show.

“I have absolutely no strategy whatsoever. I have never been on a show like this, so I just want to go there and have fun,” he said. He thinks that being the easygoing person that he is should make it very interesting to meet the lucky contestants who win a chance to be on this show.

“Unless if an ex-girlfriend of mine shows up as a contestant, I will have fun meeting the new people,” he said.

Model and actress Thusi was hilarious in her responses.

“I am doing tae kwon do and meditating every day to prepare for this show,” she joked.

“No, but seriously, I am just taking each day as it comes. I actually wish I was worried, but I am not. I am too busy these days so I am not even thinking about it,” she said.

One thing she has thought about, however, is what she’d spend the prize money on, if she won.

“I’d buy a house for my son and stop paying rent. If there is anything left over I’d do something for my dad,” she said.

While everyone seems to be taking it easy, Steenkamp has been doing more fitness training than she did before.

“I love how we all are getting along right now, but I know it will be a whole new story when the money is thrown into the mix,” she said.

“I really want to stay there until the end, only because it is is Jamaica,” she explained.

All the contestants, 14 in total, will be leaving for Jamaica on November 10 for a week of fun and games. They will compete for R1 million which only one person can win.

Tropika Island of Treasure is scheduled to air on February 2, SABC1, 6.30pm.
