Africa Cup’s hockey teams

THE SOUTH African men’s and women’s hockey teams to take part in the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Kenya next week were named yesterday.

The tournament, 2014 Hockey World Cup qualifier event, will be played in Nairobi from November 18-23 after being postponed from its original dates when a bomb exploded in the Westgate shopping mall in the city in September.

There is one change to the women’s team with goalkeeper Phume Mbande replacing Sanani Mangisa, who suffered a torn Achilles tendon and has undergone surgery.

In the men’s team, defenders Matt Guise-Brown and Andrew Cronje were unavailabl­e and Francois Pretorius and debutant Greg Last have been called up to replace them.

The South African teams are the reigning African champions, having won the last of the biennial events in Bulawayo in Zimbabwe in September 2011.

The four men’s teams competing at Nairobi’s City Park Stadium are South Africa, Egypt, Ghana and Kenya.

The four women’s teams are South Africa, Ghana, Kenya and Tanzania.
