New show with fresh beats for new generation

- THERESE OWEN

T WAS a perfect Sunday afternoon launch to set the mood for what should be a perfect Sunday afternoon show.

SABC1 had a Sunday picnic in a very upmarket boutique hotel in Northcliff with views overlooking the purple and green that is Joburg in early summer.

They supplied the guests and celebrities with picnic blankets and baskets, allowing people to relax in the hot weather.

It all began with some old-school hip hop beats by Kaya FM’s wunderkind, Wandi. Artists who performed were the brilliant Vusi Nova and his neo-soul love songs as well as Moneoa. She gave us some Beyoncéinspired love songs, filled with drama and passion.

Then it was, surprise, surprise, rapper and producer Amu who took to the decks and treated us to some earthy rap. The afternoon ended with Kid Fonque and his luxurious

Ideep house beats.

This was all in aid of a new show which will be aired on Sunday from 1pm on SABC1. Appropriately called Sunday Chillaz, the show promises a “fresh sound enjoyed by a new generations of fans”.

Somehow they managed to find Kedebone Mkhabela from who knows where. She still has those legs and seems as professional as ever.

In keeping with SABC1’s policy of one female and one male presenter, Mkhabela will be joined by Kay Sibiya, a new presenter.

Sunday Chillaz will offer viewers an opportunity to get to know this crop of young musicians with behind-the-scenes inserts.

Says Dichaba Phalatse, the marketing manager for SABC1: “The show aims to reflect and accentuate the Sunday mood using soul music.”

Expect to see Kabomo, Zonke, The Muffins and The Soil. The show will be presented in Zulu (60 percent), English (15 percent) and Xhosa and Sotho (20 percent).
