Met draw puts Jackson on plan B

- DAVID THISELTON

OWNER Ian Longmore drew a wide 14 for joint-favourite Jackson when the draw was made for this year’s J&B Met at Kenilworth on Saturday, February 1.

The final field and draw ceremony was held at the Shimmy Beach Club on the Cape Town waterfront yesterday afternoon.

There were mixed fortunes for the fancied runners but the final field selection was made easy as there were only 18 acceptances for the race.

However, Jackson’s trainer, trainer Brett Crawford shrugged off the draw and said the colt had been doing very well and now they would just have to put “plan B” into place.

Dennis Drier was however, pleased with the number nine position he drew for the other joint-favourite, Master of My Fate.

He said, “I think it’s a decent draw. He hasn’t put a foot wrong and let’s hope the next ten days go well and he gets there fit and well.”

Dean Kannemeyer drew ten for third favourite Capetown Noir and said, “He will have Karl Neisus, a veteran of over 3000 winners, aboard and he will know what to do from that draw.

He is unbeaten at this course and has won the Derby over this trip and finished a short-head second in the Daily News 2000. He is exceptionally well and has a helluva turn of foot.”

Geoff Woodruff ’s Sansui Summer Cup winner Yorker drew well in two and the owners’ racing manager Derek Brugman said that this inside draw would suit him as he is a horse “switched off ”.

However, Brugman was unhappy that last year’s runner up, the Vaughan Marshall-trained Hill Fifty Four, had been left with the only remaining draw for the second year in succession and said it was ironic that he had drawn the same number 15.

Woodruff ’s other two runners Master Sabina and Do You Remember also landed plum draws of three and five respectively.

Yogas Govender drew 16 for his only runner Lake Arthur, which was only two outside of his winner Martial Eagle’s draw last year.

Gavin van Zyl is often lucky with big race draws, but this time landed the very outside draw of 18 for No Worries.

Phumelela’s Executive Director of Sports Betting Vee Moodley said that there would be an estimated Pick 6 pool of R8 million on the day with R2,5 million already in the pot.

The official J&B Met gallops will take place at Kenilworth racecourse tomorrow morning at 7am.
