The Star Late Edition

Big Star produces a special one for love

- NOKUTHULA ZWANE

AS THE month of love comes to an end, a “Big Star” rapper released his latest offering for his female fans after months of being out of the limelight.

On Thursday, creative musical genius, Big Star (real name: Tumelo Rakumako), has released his second single called “Closer,” in the run-up to his upcoming album “Me&Mines.”

“I realised that we as South African rappers are afraid to make emotional music, honest love songs. So I created this piece to appreciate the woman in my life and just shed light on a positive love story and celebrate a new love,” said Big Star.

He said: “Initially the song was written to an acoustic guitar and Tazzy built around it and created a masterpiece. This song is for everybody! Very cross-over in the sound but also celebrates our home sounds with the guitar lines at the end of the song.”

The track keeps the local rapper’s signature sound of using a little drama and keeping to an acoustic guitar as the main instrument, “making sure that the attention of the listener gravitates more to the message of the song” he said.

This has become a modern-day love song inspired by the 25-year-old’s love life.

Big Star said the song was a dedication to and appreciation of his current lover and all women around the world during this month of love, commemorating their presence and impact they have in our lives.

The local rapper co-produced the new hit single with local producer Tazzy Lehutso whose production work has been featured on AKA’s songs Sweet Fire, Caiphus Song and One Time.

Vth Season record label founder Raphael Benza said the latest offering by the rapper has been his best work to date.

“Closer is Big Star’s best work to date. We at Vth Season are extremely proud of the work Big Star has put in to release such a masterpiece. We are confident music lovers and his fans will gravitate towards Closer and make it a radio chart topping single.

“Closer is a modern-day love song inspired by the current space that Big Star is in, in terms of his Love life. It is a dedication and appreciation from the creative musical genius to his current lover and all women around the world during this month of love, commemorating their presence and impact they have in our lives,” said Benza.

Hip-hop lovers have been giving feedback on social media and the rapper has been described as one of the few rappers who keep it authentic.

DJ Sbu said on Twitter: “The last artists who were brave enough to do live music are @ TumiMolekane and @HipHopPantsula. People aren’t talking about things that are really happening”

The local rapper has been known for winning season one of Mzansi’s reality show The Hustle in 2016.
