HAPPENING TODAY AFRIFORUM MARCH

- ANNA COX anna.cox@inl.co.za

MOTORISTS are warned to avoid the Sandton area this morning as AfriForum protesters take to the streets.

The organisation said thousands of members belonging to the Solidarity movement would be delivering memorandums to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and to Sasol’s head office in Sandton in protest against Sasol’s ownership plan, which excludes white workers.

As part of the protest, court papers were to be served on Sasol in the form of an application to the Labour Court to declare Sasol’s employee share ownership plan unlawful.

Dirk Hermann, Solidarity’s chief executive, said many of Sandton’s major streets would be closed off by the Joburg metro police.

The march was due to start at Mushroom Farm Park, with marchers proceeding to the JSE and Sasol’s head offices.

Roads such as Rivonia Road, Gwen Lane, Maude and West streets will be closed for traffic between 11am and 2pm.

Hermann said a large convoy of cars and buses would depart from the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria at around 8am, which would also cause further traffic on the N1.

“We are advising people to consider the disruption in Sandton and on the N1, and to adjust their travel plans by making use of alternative routes or by rescheduling appointments. The terms stipulated in the official permission for the march will be strictly adhered to and the march will be orderly. No damage will be caused,” added Hermann.

To limit disruption, people are encouraged to move in tandem with the bus convoy leaving Pretoria or to park their vehicles at the Rosebank Union Church. A bus shuttle service will be provided from there to Mushroom Farm Park. |
