- SONGEZO NDLENDLE

TWO South African cities have been featured on the annual list of the 100 cheapest and most expensive cities in the world for 2019.

According to the latest research released by Hoppa, a global leader in ground transportation services, Cape Town ranked as the 54th most expensive city in the world, up from 62nd, costing travellers £145.31 (R2 584.52) on average overall, while Joburg took the 76th place, up from 81st at £111.27 (R1 979.07) in food, accommodation, and transport costs.

The research showed that New York, in the US, ranked the most expensive for the second year in a row, while Manila, in the Philippines, replaced Ukraine’s Kiev as the cheapest.

A hundred cities across the world were researched, and criteria included the cost of a hotel room for the night, the average price of both restaurant meals and fast food, the costs of beverages such as coffee, beer, wine, and cocktails, as well as the price of taxi fares. Flight prices were excluded.

Based on the criteria, a night in New York would set travellers back £375.38 (R6 676.59), while a night in Manila would only total £75.53 (R1 343.39).

The research also revealed that four of the most expensive cities in the world were American and three were Spanish. Asia was home to most of the cheapest cities. | African News Agency (ANA)
