E-LEARNING SERVICES NOMINATED

THE City of Joburg’s e-learning services have been nominated for the UN’s world summit on the information society (WSIS). The city libraries’ e-Learning services are responsible for promoting literacy to all the residents of the city through various programmes and workshops run in the city libraries.

This is done to assist residents in bridging the digital divide as well as to enable them to be connected globally in line with one of the city’s priorities of being a smart city.

The WSIS is a two-phase UN summit that was initiated to create an evolving multi-stakeholder platform aimed at addressing the issues raised by information and communication technologies (ICTs) through a structured and inclusive approach at the national, regional and international levels.

The goal is to achieve a common vision, desire and commitment to build a people-centric, inclusive and development-oriented information society where everyone can create, access, utilise and share information.

In October last year, the city’s Library and Information Services: e-Learning Unit submitted its classroom to the WSIS Stocktaking Database to ensure recognition of the city’s libraries for their contribution. The database is a publicly accessible system providing information on ICT initiatives and projects carried out by governments, international organisations, business and civil society.

WSIS Prize 2019 is a mechanism to evaluate and reward stakeholders who have submitted projects.
