Inspiring vision for the future
THE GRADUATION season is a great way of inspiring young people to take up education opportunities.
In an effort to make education accessible and inspire high school pupils, Rhodes University will again live-stream its graduation ceremonies to local schools during their graduation ceremonies.
This graduation season will see 2321 graduates receive their degrees and diplomas. The live streams are aimed at Grade 11 and 12 pupils, and the initiative started last year as a partnership between the Communications and Advancement and Community Engagement Divisions at the university.
“We are excited about pioneering this very vital educational initiative.
“We view this not as an act of charity, but as an essential part of recognising the collective humanity and shared destiny of the community we live and study in,” said the director for communications and advancement, Luzuko Jacobs.
Nosipho Nkwinti, the senior co-ordinator of community relations and student organisations at Rhodes University’s Community Engagement, is passionate about the positive changes that have been brought to the Makhanda community through this initiative.
“I have seen students who have never even dreamt of gaining access to Rhodes, realising that it is possible for them to come and study with us.
“We want people to know that Rhodes University is… part of Makhanda community,” she said.
“From this screening, I have learnt that there are opportunities for township students such as myself at Rhodes University,” A Grade 11 pupil from Ntsika High School said at a screening.
