Collection recalls a bygone era

An Edwardian phone booth, magazines, antique furniture among items for sale

A FINE collection of antique and period furniture – including a large variety of embellishm­ents, collectabl­es and curiositie­s – will be auctioned on April 27 at 10.30am by Bernardi’s Auctioneer­s at a country estate at 320 Elevation Avenue, Randjesfon­tein, Midrand.

Some of the nostalgic items include:

Steamer brass porthole. Edwardian telephone booth. Several old typewriter­s. Black Forest barometer. Also on offer will be a selection of wine and spirits, National Geographic magazine bound volumes from 1919 to 1946, Punch annuals and coffee table books.

A selection of decorative South African art, including acclaimed works by Casey van der Leek (Cape landscapes and mountainsc­apes), Frieda van der Merwe and a posthumous Frederic Remington “Norther” bronze sculpture cast will also be among the items on the sale.

Persian and Oriental carpets and rugs, including Keshan, Shiraz and Hamadan patterns, will add ambience to the lots.

Auctioneer Carl Bernardi says among the quality furniture contents is an antique Cape pinewood slopefront meelkis, stinkwood Regency riempie bench, hall tables, Andalusian 19th-century walnut and leather hall chairs, Rajistani palace doors, Balinese carved bedsteads and a unique temple doorway.

There is also lots of silverplat­e and silverware, including a large collection of electropla­ted hotel and teaware, canteens of cutlery, a Victorian silver tray, wine coasters, napkin rings, Peruvian silver trinket boxes and a Russian silver cheroot case.

Swarovski and Cloisonne objet, crystal, bespoke Diana Carmichael collectors’ serving spoons, as well as forks and bowls, will also be among the lots.

In addition, a brand-new Snomaster 250kg ice-maker and two commercial slider-top island display freezers are catalogued for “an auction for all tastes and pockets”.

Bernardi says viewing for the sale will open on Thursday from 10am to 5pm and will run until the morning of the auction.
