READY TO JAM WITH MONSTERS?

- MOTORING STAFF

PSA, ETROLHEADS around the country are gearing up for this year’s Monster Jam

set to hit major cities with a bang over the next few weeks.

Dubbed the most family-friendly motorsport in the world, Monster Jam shows will take place at Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban, on April 20, Cape Town Stadium on April 27, and FNB Stadium, Joburg on May 4.

Organisers say tickets are selling fast through Computicket.

The SA shows will feature eight of the world’s most famous Monster Jam trucks, including Monster Jam World Finals champions Grave Digger and Max-D.

Monster Energy, Gas Monkey, Megaladon, Zombie, El Toro Loco and Monster Mutt Dalmatian also form part of the larger-than-life event that takes place on specially-designed tracks that ‘optimise mobility’ so the craziest trucks in the world can go head-to-head in wheelies, donuts, obstacle-course racing and freestyle competitions.

Organisers say: “The 2019 season sees trained, world-class international male and female athletes battle it out for supremacy on the track. They have mastered not only the physical strength and mental stamina needed to compete, but the vital dexterity to control 4500kg machines capable of doing backflips, vertical two-wheel skills and racing at speeds of up to 110km/h to produce jaw-dropping, live motorsport action seen around the world.”

Standing four metres tall and four metres wide, these custom trucks run on methanol, with each engine making about 1100kW.

Some of these custom-designed trucks also undergo more than 40 hours of paint time, while carving one tyre requires around 50 hours of labour. The tyres themselves are 1.7 metres high by 1.1 metres wide.

At Monster Jam SA, trucks will face off in three forms of competition: sideby-side racing, two-wheel competition in which drivers show off their best two-wheel moves, and the freestyle competition in which drivers have a limited amount of time on the open floor to show off their skills.

Visit the Computicket website to get your hands on tickets today, before they sell out.
