Mohomi targets yet another victory

LUCKY Mohomi, the former national 10km and half-marathon champion, is looking to end a successful 2019 with a bang.

He will line up for either the 10km or 21.1km race at the Nelson Mandela Remembrance Run on Sunday with the sole purpose of being victorious.

Success has, after all, generally been his middle name this season – Mohomi winning just about every race he has entered in 2019.

“I honestly do not remember how many races I won this year. I stopped counting when I got to 10,” Mohomi said.

Among his successes this year was the inaugural Fat Cats AC 10km race at Mall of Africa in October, the Northgate 10, George Claasen 10, Pirates 10 as well as the half marathons at Johnson Crane, Polokwane Mayor’s race and last weekend’s Run For Bible in Pretoria.

He has now set his sights on the Mandela Remembrance Run.

“I will be running the Mandela race. I will decide on Friday after consulting my coach Johannes Kekana whether to run the 10km or the half marathon on Sunday. I do not know who will be in the race. But I will try hard to compete and do well in the race,” said Mohale.

“It is my final race of the year. I will go and rest at home in Limpopo after this race. I will start running again in the second week of January at the Dischem Half Marathon.”

Mohale is still nursing hopes of qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

“Yes I am still looking for a place in the marathon team. It is possible that all three athletes that are in the team can be replaced by another three, those who will be brave enough to run better qualifying times. I would like to be one of those three.”

The 34-year-old has long dreamt of running at the Olympics.

“When I was home in Limpopo and we were young kids growing up there I was told that the Olympics is the greatest sporting event in the world and I grew up to see that. I would like to be remembered as one of the athletes who represented his country in the event,” said Mohale.
