The Star Late Edition

Older, but still immaculate

- CHARL WILKEN

THE Ford EcoSport we know made its global debut in 2013 and from the word go the vehicle became a popular choice among crossover or small SUV buyers.

ON TEST

Our six-year-old test vehicle had 157 000km on the clock but was still in impressive overall condition.

Under the bonnet is a 1.5-litre 16-valve petrol engine that delivers 91kW of peak power and 150Nm of torque.

Mechanically the vehicle still sounded and felt great. The clutch bit at just the right point and the five-speed gearbox still shifted sweetly between cogs. Overall performance from the 1500cc engine proved more than adequate in town and on the highway. Fuel consumption was also more than decent at a quoted 6.4l/100km.

THE DRIVE

The practical EcoSport had decent ground clearance, ensuring it could tackle reasonably rough roads without scraping the underside, its higher ground clearance also aiding bump absorption.

As you would expect from an older vehicle, you’d have to do without a sophisticated infotainment system, although you still get most of the necessary creature comforts. Luxury and safety features included in this car:

Air-conditioning, power steering, central locking, electric windows (front only), on-board trip computer, front and side airbags, radio with CD-player, full-size spare wheel, USB, Aux ports and 12V connector, ABS with EBD.

ROOMY CABIN

The EcoSport’s height also meant there was plenty of headroom inside, for those in the front as well as in the back. Legroom proved pretty decent as well and the seats were comfortable too. Boot space seemed more adequate than generous. The rear seats did, however, fold down, increasing loading space to 705 litres.

When pure value for money is at the top of your crossover shopping list, we believe this six-year-old Ford EcoSport delivers just that. It was without doubt a great little all-rounder that ticked a lot of boxes for us.

It’s durable and of good value, but boot space was not as good as its rivals. SPECIFICATIONS MAKE AND MODEL: 2014 Ford EcoSport
