Chuene blasts booze detractors

- ENTERTAINMENT REPORTER

MANY South Africans rejoiced as the two-month ban on the sale of alcohol was lifted on Monday under level 3 of lockdown.

Videos and pictures of the long queues of people waiting to buy alcohol were shared on social media.

Some Twitter users said black people should use the money to buy property while others took a jab at the people queuing.

Actress Rami Chuene said: “You guys talk poverty and how black people don’t save you grew up with stokvel/mogodisano.

“You still can’t tell how your parents managed to send you and your six siblings to school.

“If Black saving methods didn’t work, why are banks and retailers hijacking them now?” (sic)

The former star spoke out against those on

Twitter who said only poor people abused alcohol.

“Alcohol abuse is everybody’s problem, not a ‘poor’ problem.

“Some of you with high paying jobs are functional alcoholics.

“Your PA’s run behind you with mints. Expensive whiskey in your offices then you come out here and cry about a queue?

“Then call your fellow Blacks ‘them’? Wow.” (sic)

She ended her thread by throwing a bit of shade at the people who posted classist remarks.

“You know what? Enjoy your expensive booze, cigars and white lines – yes, I said it – while looking down on the masses.

“Yes, I hope it makes your problems look better” – Rami Chuene@ramichuene).

Her comments came after musician and DJ Prince Kaybee and TV presenter and radio personality Somizi Mhlongo-Motaung spoke out about their fears with regard to the sale of alcohol.
