We must together demand justice for the Myeni family

- NYANISO QWESHA |

I AM disturbed by what happened to Lindani Myeni in this darkest hour.

What bothers me are the reports that this unarmed young guy was shot many times by police officers.

What made it easy for this young life to be short-lived in the US by the country’s police officers?

This sad reality comes at a challenging time in the US, in which race-related problems are on the rise. It is not easy, and the question remains, why was it easy for the US police officers to shoot at a human being like that, without recourse?

Will the Myeni family will get justice as deserved, or is it going to be another long case with no actionable outcomes?

What has confronted me is the silence from all of us as the country’s citizens, and not condemning in numbers this barbaric act by the US police officers. It is, however, essential to note the lonely voice by the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government.

They are doing a brilliant job in ensuring there is justice for Myeni’s family.

I still believe that there is hope that all those who did wrong, resulting in Myeni’s death, will soon face the law and be held accountable. The arrest of those responsible is necessary, especially for his young kids.

It isn’t comforting to note those kids will now continue their lives without their father. There is nothing to be done now to save Lindani’s life.

Still, it is critically important that an effort to uncover the circumstances surrounding his death, and for the responsible individuals to account for their actions. I would think this silence from all of us is a concern.

I still believe that the Myeni family will need answers, and to get answers, they will need all of our support.

We have shown solidarity before, and I think we will do the same and be with the Myeni family even in this hour. Let us rise and demand justice for the Myeni family.
