Cyclonic storms, heavy rains kill 6

SIX people were killed in rain-related incidents accompanyi­ng storms due to cyclone Tauktae in Karnataka and Kerala, officials said yesterday.

Cyclonic storm Tauktae in the Arabian Sea is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm with wind speed expected to touch 160km/h today.

Tauktae is likely to reach Gujarat coast this evening hours and cross Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva (Bhavnagar district) early tomorrow morning, the federal ministry of earth science quoting the India Meteorolog­ical Department (IMD) said.

According to the IMD, the cyclone has brought heavy rains to some areas.

Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority said four people were killed and 73 villages destroyed in six districts of the state due to Tauktae.

Authoritie­s have set up relief camps and deployed rescue teams.

The rains, according to officials, have caused heavy damage to the power and agricultur­e sectors.
