Artist switches to renewable energy

- LEHLOHONOLO MASHIGO

TOP hip hop South African artist Nomuzi “Moozlie” Mabena says young people should be conscious of brands that are forward looking and innovative, especially around issues of renewable energy.

At the launch of Castle Lite #SwitchToRenewable campaign last week, Mabena said she was happy the brand was switching its electricity usage for brewing its beer to renewables.

“Lockdown really got us thinking we should be a lot more conscious about things we do and the way we do them. Everybody knows that Castle Lite throws great events and parties, but we need to consider the impact that this has on the environment,” Mabena added.

The rapper said the switch to renewable energy is important because through lockdown we’ve learnt how fragile life can be, so any step to make sure life is prolonged is welcome, such as drinking a beer brand that is making responsible choices.

“I’m 29 and not a super-green freak, but as a fashion lover, traveller and doing dope things in the world, I do want to have kids one day.

“I do consider matters of carbon emissions and the footprint we are leaving. I believe we should make sure what we do today should not be to the detriment of future generations,” she said.

Mabena said a young person in the township can definitely relate to what Castle Lite is trying to achieve, especially given the power outages

It’s important that young people should encourage those around them to choose a brand that encourages sustainable electricity usage in producing their product, she said.

Castle Lite brand director Colleen Duvenage said as a brand they have always been innovative. This means they would be using less electricity off the grid to brew Castle Lite, she said.

“Which means there is going to be more electricity to go around for your enjoyment, the parties and the fun times with your friends, there will be more of that to go around,” said Duvenage.

The initiative felt like a responsibility, not only to the environment and country, but also the consumers of Castle Lite, she said.

“Last week had been one of load shedding , where the lights go out and the fridge goes off, so what better way to land this innovation than to say we will use less and we are committing to use less on this journey to switch to renewable electricity,” said Duvenage.
