FORMER US president Bill Clinton was admitted to the University of California Irvine Medical Centre’s intensive care unit for a urinary tract infection that spread to his bloodstrea­m, his doctors told CNN.

His spokespers­on, Angel Ureña, wrote on social media that Clinton was on the mend. Clinton’s condition and his release from hospital will likely be in the news in the coming days.

United Kingdom

World leaders are gearing up for the COP26 UN climate change summit which will be held in the Scottish industrial city of Glasgow in the UK.

The summit is scheduled to run from October 31 until November 12 and will bring together world leaders, business and civil society and hopes to set out new targets under the three pillars of the Paris Agreement, namely mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, adaptation to the impact of global warming and financial commitment to support those most vulnerable to climate change. In the coming weeks, the summit is expected to be discussed at great length in the media.

Afghanista­n continues to rebuild, additional humanitari­an help came through this past week as the EU pledged $1.15 billion in aid.

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said the funds would not go directly to the Taliban but instead would be channelled to internatio­nal organisati­ons working on the ground.

UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres appealed to the Taliban to fulfil its obligation­s towards Afghan women and girls under internatio­nal human rights and humanitari­an law.

Afghanista­n has been faced with sporadic attacks claimed by Isis-K and in the coming week readers can expect Afghanista­n’s next steps towards safeguardi­ng its people.

Indo-Pacific region

Tension remains between China and Taiwan after Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen said it would not bow down to pressure from China.

Meanwhile, China, Hong Kong and the Philippine­s have been facing severe storms due to Typhoon Kompasu and will continue to be on high alert this week.
