APART from all the new electric concepts and even the odd flying car, the Geneva auto show last week also delivered the three 2018 World Car of the Year finalists.

The World Car of the Year title winner will be announced at the New York International Auto Show on the 28th of March 2018. Apart from the overall WCOTY prize, there are five other awards:

World Car of the Year

• Mazda CX-5

• Range Rover Velar

• Volvo XC60

The Velar is the odds on favourite, but both the CX5 and XC60 are award-winners that will make the Tata-owned brand work hard for its prize.

Word Urban Car

• Ford Fiesta

• Suzuki Swift

• Volkswagen Polo

The Ford Fiesta is a favourite to be voted the best car for city drivers, but it will be a close thing with value offerings and solid drivetrains coming from the Volkswagen Polo or Suzuki Swift.

World Luxury Car

• Audi A8

• Porsche Cayenne

• Porsche Panamera You read it right, an executive sedan is up against the Porsches. The A8 is simply that good.

World Performance Car

• BMW M5

• Honda Civic Type R

• Lexus LC 500 No petrolhead will argue with the BMW M5 on this list, but they will welcome the competition from Japan in the shapely new Honda Civic Type R and the gorgeous Lexus LC 500 coupe.

World Green Car

• BMW 530e iPerformance

• Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

• Nissan Leaf Among these three finalists, the Nissan Leaf is the only electric car, as opposed to the hybrids from BMW and Chrysler, but range anxiety is still an issue, the Chrysler can pacify.

World Car Design of the Year

• Lexus LC 500

• Range Rover Velar

• Volvo XC60

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, which makes this category very subjective.

Wheels predict it will be a close thing between the Range Rover and the Lexus.
