DELAYED START FOR SALGA GAMES
CLOSE to 6 000 athletes from across the province descended on the Msunduzi Athletics Stadium yesterday for the official opening of the South African Local Government Association (Salga) Games yesterday.
The games, which are being hosted by uMgungundlovu District, will take place from today to Sunday and will involve 10 districts and one metro across the province.
This year’s games have 15 sports codes, which include basketball, netball, soccer and rugby.
The official opening was delayed by at least three hours yesterday, with officials only making their way to the event after 3 pm while the official programme was set to begin at 1 pm.
The KwaZulu-Natal Athletics will partner with Salga and will be responsible for the athletics programme which includes two days of track and field and one day of cross-country. The athletics programme will be hosted at the Pietermaritzburg Msunduzi Athletics Stadium and the cross-country at the Oval. — WR.
