DE­LAYED START FOR SALGA GAMES

CLOSE to 6 000 ath­letes from across the prov­ince de­scended on the Msun­duzi Ath­let­ics Sta­dium yes­ter­day for the of­fi­cial open­ing of the South African Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment As­so­ci­a­tion (Salga) Games yes­ter­day.

The games, which are be­ing hosted by uM­gun­gundlovu District, will take place from to­day to Sun­day and will in­volve 10 dis­tricts and one metro across the prov­ince.

This year’s games have 15 sports codes, which in­clude bas­ket­ball, net­ball, soc­cer and rugby.

The of­fi­cial open­ing was de­layed by at least three hours yes­ter­day, with of­fi­cials only mak­ing their way to the event after 3 pm while the of­fi­cial pro­gramme was set to be­gin at 1 pm.

The KwaZulu-Na­tal Ath­let­ics will part­ner with Salga and will be re­spon­si­ble for the ath­let­ics pro­gramme which in­cludes two days of track and field and one day of cross-coun­try. The ath­let­ics pro­gramme will be hosted at the Pi­eter­mar­itzburg Msun­duzi Ath­let­ics Sta­dium and the cross-coun­try at the Oval. — WR.
