First-rate hospital in Edendale

The Witness - - OPINION - Dr RAMESH BIRTHARTHEE Mountain Rise

I WAS admitted to Eden Gardens private hospital on Diwali day (November 7) with severe pneumonia. I did not know what to expect from a hospital that had opened its doors just a month before. I was admitted to the high-care unit.

Fighting for my life, I had noticed nothing in the room. The next morning, I was visited by the matron, my doctors, the CEO, the nursing staff and the head of the ICU and high care unit. I felt like a maharaja. I thought to myself, gosh I never knew I was so well-known and important. Citizens of greater Edendale and Pietermaritzburg CBD, this is how this hospital receives you. I have been in hospitals in and around all of PMB because I suffer from a chronic condition but I have never felt as if I was at home, of course minus all those nasty pipes.

Coming to the main point: this article is not to advertise the hospital, but to tell the citizens of greater Edendale that they have a private hospital in their back yard. It takes guts to invest. Prior to 1994, there were cries of discrimination due to a lack of facilities, etc. Today, greater Edendale is growing into a major CBD. The opening of an excellent private hospital in the area is the start of new development.

At the moment, the government is planning a national health scheme for all its citizens. This means that ultimately, all people will have medical aid.

I will tell you this, private facilities will be short and developing such facilities is not done overnight as it is very costly. Citizens of Edendale, use this facility and don’t let down the development. Make this project a success and I am sure other projects will follow.

Finally, the TLC I received during my 14 days stay at the Eden Gardens Hospital was comparable to none.
